COMPUTER MAINTENANCE
*Do's in Using a Computer
1. Do run anti-virus
It is a software that helps you to prevent viruses from infecting your computer. Simply having the anti-virus software isn't enough. People need to constantly update and use it as malicious software is being created everyday.
2. Do routinely reinstall your operating system
The nature of the operating system is after 12 to 18 months. Windows is simply going to slow down and it's going to become less and less efficient. The solution? Reinstalling the operating system.
3. Do use the cloud
The famous cloud is really just the Internet. Storing backup information or files on the Internet allows you to access them from anywhere. So if, worst case scenario, your house burns down, your digital photos will be safe even though your computer and external hard drive are fried.
4. Do get a solid state drive
If you want to invest in your computer, consider getting a solid state drive, an alternative to the traditional spinning hard drive. They are expensive but they will make your computer run about several times faster.
5. Do backup
Make sure that you either save your files in an area that is backed up or that you back up (copy to some other PC/Media) your files regularly, so that if there is a crash, or theft, you have current copies of your documents.
6. Do shut down properly
When you turn off your PC/Laptop please shut it down properly, try not to just turn the power off. This will ensure that everything is saved and closed properly.
*Don'ts in Using a Computer
1. Don't click on short links
At least, don't click without doing proper research first. When it comes to bit links, the problem is that the final destination is unknown.
2. Don't open attachments in email from unknown, suspicious, or untrustworthy sources
If it is an executable don't open it. Those executable e files often end in (.exe). In today's hacker-friendly world, getting a hold of someone's email address is relatively easy.
3. Don't blindly click on links in browsers or emails
Just because the link reads www.facebook.com doesn't mean it's going to Facebook. It is recommended to hover over the link with their mouse and look at the bottom of their browser to see the exact destination address don't match up, don't click.
4. Don't fill your hard drive to capacity
It is recommended to keep at least 20 percent of the hard drive free. If you are doing a gazillion things at once on your computer, chances are that you have used up your entire RAM. Once your RAM is used, your computer uses your hard drive as additional RAM. But if your hard drive is full to the brim, this will end up crashing your computer.
5. Don't store anything on your desktop
The desktop is typically not backed up, so if the computer crashes then anything on the desktop is lost.
6. Don't save passwords
It is better that you input it every time. If you get any SpyWare on your PC one of the two major things they do is look across your system for any saved passwords, also means that if someone else is working at your computer they won't have automatic access.
7. Don't install anything
If you don't know exactly what you are installing, on your computer, then don't install it. It may be what it seems. Especially SpyWare cleaners, they are more likely to infect you than clean.
OTHER INFORMATION:
Disk Defragmentation - Defragmentation is the process of locating the noncontigous fragments of data into which a computer file may be divided as it is stored on a hard disk and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into fewer fragments or into the whole file. Defragmentation reduces data access time and allows storage to be used more efficiently.

Hi Ma'am! What is the difference of Solid State Drive in Traditional Spinning Hard Drive?
ReplyDeleteHello daisy :) The traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) is the basic nonvolatile storage on a computer. That is, it doesn't "go away" like the data on the system memory when you turn the system off.
DeleteAn SSD does much the same job functionally (e.g., saving your data while the system is off, booting your system, etc.) as an HDD, but instead of a magnetic coating on top of platters, the data is stored on interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there's no power present.
BRIEF EXPLANATION:
The SSD stores information on microchips and contains no moving parts. Meanwhile, a hard disk drive records information on a storage platter by moving a mechanical arm with a read/write head over a spinning platter.
Hi Ma'am Jhen! I am just confused about Disk Defragmentation, what if I oftenly used defragging is it helpful or it may cause harm to my system?
ReplyDeleteHi vera! Defragging rearranges the layout of files on your hard disk for faster access. Specifically when (or even if) you need to do it at all is evolving.
Delete“Defragging” is short for “de-fragmenting” and it’s a process run on most hard drives to help make accessing the files on that disk faster.
I can recommend to you that you can do this weekly on your PC. It may not cause harm to your system. Instead it will help you for faster use.
What do you think will be the problem if I consistently shut down my computer unproperly? I do it many times when I was unconscious or busy.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen! When you unplug your desktop computer, remove the battery and power cord from your laptop, or long-hold the Power button to force a computer to stop, you're doing so outside of the operating system's control.
Delete-By just pulling the plug, you run a good risk of corrupting data on your hard drive and a very small risk of actually damaging hardware.
-If you hold the Power button down for five or 10 seconds until the computer turns off this is not OK. That's like just pulling the power plug. It completely bypasses the process of shutting down and can result in serious problems. If you shut down your computer this way regularly, stop it because you are almost literally asking your computer to corrupt the data stored on its hard drive.
Hi mam jhenny can i ask a question mam how can i use clouds???
ReplyDeleteHello Mr. Mark Joven! The famous cloud is really just the Internet. Storing backup information or files on the Internet allows you to access them from anywhere. So if, worst case scenario, your house burns down, your digital photos will be safe even though your computer and external hard drive are fried.
DeleteYou can use GOOGLE DRIVE for uploading and saving of your files. That is how it works.
Hi Mam. If the computer is well maintained how long can the computer be used? Is it ok if i connect the computer directly to the outlet if i dont have an AVR?
ReplyDeleteHello Mr. Aljun!
DeleteThe lifespan of a computer is going to vary. Depending on how often you use the computer and what you use it for is going to factor in the equation. Also, the original equipment of the computer is going to play a big factor. If you buy a low-end computer, you are typically getting dated hardware. Not used per se, but you'll typically be sold hardware that is 2 or 3 generations behind the newest hardware. And these lower end machines will obviously have cheaper hardware. The cheaper hardware won't last as long as the more expensive hardware.
Definitely it will also depends on the brand you are using or the parts it has.
Does anyone know - What the Average life is of an Average Desktop Computer?
(Average = common brand name, $500- $800)
We used AVR in the Philippines to regulate the voltage level and avoid damaging the computer since we are capable of using 220V.
You probably have new appliances now in your home? Whether they’re for entertainment or kitchen use, remember to use an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) to it.
Some people might think, “No need!” while others believe that it depends on the area you live in. And if your city does not have voltage problems, you can connect it directly to the plug. These might be true but being knowledgeable of the facts can be safer than believing the opinions of others.
According to Tom Harris, power surges occur when something boosts the electrical charge at some point in the power lines. This causes an increase in the electrical potential energy, which can increase the current flowing to your wall outlet. A number of different things can cause this to happen.
What is the best anti virus for you mam?
ReplyDeleteHi Sumalinog! To know the best antivirus as of 2016, please check my another post. Here is the link: http://basicstalk.blogspot.com/2016/07/best-antivirus-2016-10-antivirus.html
DeleteEven if you have the best antivirus of all times but you are not always updating it and you are using only the FREE, you can not use all the feature which that anti virus has. In this case, you need to pay to use the PREMIUM antivirus for the 100% protection.
I can recommend to you the ESET anti-virus, AVG anti-virus and COMODO anti-virus.
DeleteAre two anti-virus better than one in protecting your computer?
ReplyDeleteGood Day Ann! Using a multiple anti-virus programs is a bad idea. Here are the reason why.
Delete1.They will try to kill each other. Because antivirus programs search your system for programs that are monitoring and sending information about your system, a competing antivirus program that is monitoring and sending information about your system tends to look like a virus, so it will attempt to block it and remove it. A competing antivirus program that is monitoring and sending information about your system tends to look like a virus.
Delete2.They will fight over viruses. When an antivirus program encounters a virus, it removes it and quarantines it. But if a competing antivirus program sees that quarantined file and wants to remove and quarantine it in accordance with its own objectives, then it will repeatedly send reports and notifications about this virus that it is detecting, even though it is no longer actually a threat to your system. If you don’t want to continually get bogus warning messages, this will be a problem for you.
3. They will sap your power. Antivirus programs use a lot of your system memory to conduct system scans and other related operations. If you have two of these operating simultaneously, your system’s effectiveness can be greatly diminished or completely wiped out altogether, and without any benefit, since the two are performing redundant operations.
When it comes to protecting your computer, more protection is not better. Take some time to do the research and choose one comprehensive antivirus suite that has been independently tested to combat the latest known malware programs and that will singlehandedly arm your system to the teeth to protect it against every type of threat.
So all in all, You don’t need to install more than one antivirus program. In fact, running more than one antivirus program at the same time can cause conflicts and errors that make your antivirus protection less effective or not effective at all.
